Here are five tips to keep in mind when in the early stages of a hold ‘em tourney:
1. Be patient. Just because the blinds are low doesn’t mean you have to play every above average hand. Pick your spots when in position and have a premium hand.
2. Protect your big blind (primarily against smaller raises). You can get into bigger pots (or get priced in) by just calling a small raise when your in the BB position. Almost 50% of the time you’ll out flop someone who just min raised with an average hand.
3. Be well rested and content. Tournaments are long and stamina plays a big part.
4. Play tight. Most players will be playing tight as well (especially online). Not very many players are going to risk big bets or all ins unless they have the nuts.
5. Medium hand win medium pots. Big hands win big pots.
Obviously there are a lot more tips and strategies to go over. I will be posting several parts to NLH tourney strategy guides. Future articles will have much more detail as our website is still under construction.
